Update from Singapore International Coin Fair 2013

The Singapore International Coin Fair (SICF) 2013 (www.sgcoinfair.com) took place on March 29th – 31st, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 1 – Hall A, which is located within the world-class Marina Bay Sands integrated resort.  It is organised by Panda America (www.pandaamerica.com).

Sunshine Minting Inc. (SMI) taken a booth to showcase their latest Mint Mark SI security feature, that requires a special decoder to read the security image. However, they are not selling anything during the fair.

We had a chance to speak to Mr Tom Hallenbeck, President of American Numismatic Association (ANA) (www.money.org).  He shared that ANA is now in the midst of revamping their website to provide more information to attract the younger demographic.  He noted that it is welcoming to see a mixed crowd at this fair, young and old.  When asked on the counterfeiting products in the market, he simply quash the topic. He added this is not something new, counterfeit has been since the beginning of time.  His advise is to join a local club, or read and get educated on how to spot the fake. Wise words indeed.

They are many Singapore based bullion seller in the fair. And there are even more big and small enterprise, trading on collectors coins and notes.  They come from Malaysia, Singapore, US, China and even Middle East.

Only 2 & half Mint (not men)

It must be said that the lack of Major National Mint’s participation has dampen the quality of the fair.  Local host Singapore Mint and Israel Mint. The half is Monnaie de Paris (www.monnaiedeparis.fr), who was there only to give out brochures, without exhibits.

There also a big space allocated for children interactive area. From minting your own coin and note to coloring your own currency. We felt that this is a great way to engage the children to learn about their heritage and money.

We have not seen so many Panda coins in a single room, now we have.

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) sets up booth to provide services during the fair.
